Brown Sugar Circle

A supportive community for Black women in Los Angeles.

Picnic edition

Come as you are.
Leave knowing somebody.

A shuffled deck for Black women to meet, laugh, and find common ground—open it on every phone or use one together.

Your picnic group

Let’s find your circle.

Tap below to pick a number from 1–12.

Before you begin

Make a little room for each other.

01

Choose how you’ll play

Everyone can open the link and take turns drawing, or one person can read from a shared phone.

02

Draw, ask, answer—or pass

When it’s your turn, draw a card and ask the group. No one owes the circle a story.

03

Listen without fixing

Be curious, leave space, and ask before offering advice. Personal stories stay here.

Opening icebreaker

Share your name, your neighborhood, and one small thing bringing you joy right now.

Keep it easy—about 30 seconds each.

Shuffled deck Card 1 of 36
Warm up01

Take turns around the circle—or pass.

There are no wrong answers. Let people finish before jumping in.

Closing round

Leave the circle with intention.

01

In one word, how are you leaving this conversation?

02

What is one thing you heard that you want to remember?

03

If it feels mutual, who would you like to stay connected with?

A few new names. A little more community.

Thank you for showing up with warmth, curiosity, and care.

Host guide • 60+ guests

A smooth start for a big picnic.

Best setup

Make 12 numbered circles. Guests tap “Find my circle” on their phones, then head to the matching number.

Before guests arrive

  • Place a number at each blanket or seating area.
  • Text or QR-code this link so every guest can get a circle number and open the cards.
  • Ask guests to tap “Find my circle” before they settle in with friends.
  • Because the assignment is random, choose one friendly floater to balance crowded groups and help late arrivals.

30-minute opening flow

  1. 0–3

Move into groups and open the link on one or more phones.

  2. 3–7

Read the agreements and do the opening icebreaker.

  3. 7–24

Draw 5–7 cards. Let the conversation breathe.

  4. 24–30

Use the closing round and invite optional contact exchange.

What to say

“Welcome to Brown Sugar Circle. Open the link and tap ‘Find my circle.’ You’ll get a number from 1 to 12—head to the picnic sign with that same number. Once everyone is settled, you can each draw a shuffled card and ask it to the group, or use one phone together. You can answer any prompt—or pass. The goal isn’t to impress anyone; it’s simply to leave knowing a few more names.”
